Lady Cat Season Game Summaries and Comments

District Play-offs at Sidney vs. Sutherland Feb. 28, 2014

“In what I would call one of the best high school basketball games that I have been part of in the eight years I have coached at Hemingford we came out on the short end of a 63-60 score against Sutherland in the District Championship game.

This was a game against two very evenly matched teams that had runs for each team.  We went to the locker room up at half time and then allowed them to get the lead back in the third quarter.  Samantha Staggs, Sutherland’s really good guard hit about a twenty-five footer to tie the game at 58 to go into over-time.

In the over time we just could not get the momentum back and were able to only score two points, to Sutherland’s 5.  We are really proud of our kids for their 20-4 record on the season, and for the progress that was made throughout the season.  We are losing four really special senior players that exhibited exceptional leadership all season.  They will be missed.

The future however, is bright for Lady Cat Basketball as there will be a really strong core of talent returning.  Our team and coaches would like to thank our community for their wonderful support all season.  There was not one game all season where we did not outnumber the opposition fans.”

Minatare, Morrill, and Kimball games  GAMES- February 10th, 11th, and 14th

“We had a good week with wins over at Minatare, at Morrill and at Kimball.  In the make-up game with Minatare we were able to play fifteen different players significant minutes and get a good win.  On Tuesday we traveled to play Morrill in a game that had the potential to be pretty close.  Our ladies played some of their best basketball of the season and defeated the Lions 64-24.  The second half of this one was a dominant performance in several phases of the game.  On Friday we were able to escape the Longhorns of Kimball by playing very well in the fourth quarter.  We scored 24 points in the fourth to overcome a ten point deficit and get the win 56-52.  This was a good way to close out the regular season with an overall record of 18-3 as we get ready for Sub-District.

Our junior varsity teams closed out their season with wins at both Morrill and Kimball to close out an outstanding 14-1 season.  We are very proud of the progress of this group.  They have a bright future.”

Gord-Rush and Kimball   GAMES- Lady Cats Finish 3rd in WTC

February 7th and 8th @ WNCC Cougar Palace (WTC Tourney)

“Our team really rebounded well on Saturday against Kimball after letting the Friday night game against Gordon/Rushville slip away.  We led the Mustangs by eleven points heading into the fourth quarter only to lose 52-49.

This was very disappointing to our players who had earned the #1 seed in the WTC Tournament.  We looked at as a chance to grow and get better.  In the third place game on Saturday we defeated a good Kimball team 61-47.   We were down 18-22 at half time and then pretty well controlled the rest of the game and really surged in the fourth quarter to finish off the Longhorns.

This was a very good team win with ten different players getting in the scoring column.  We are back on the road for three games this next week before starting sub-district play”

Hay Springs and Edgemont  GAMES- January 28th / February 1st

“The Junior Varsity team finished out the week of January 27th with a 4-0 record.  On Monday in the Bridgeport JV tournament our Lady Cats defeated Mitchell, and then followed that up with a win against Hay Springs on Tuesday.  In the Championship game of the Bridgeport Tournament we were able to defeat Bayard.  On Saturday night this group got another win at Edgemont to go 12-1  on the season.”

“Our varsity team got two really good wins this week as well with a Parents Night victory against a scrappy Hay Springs team 44-30.  We did a nice job out of the gate in this one and then kind of let the Hawks hang around.  On Saturday February 1 we traveled to Edgemont and played really well to defeat the Moguls 65-28.  This brings us to the WTC Tournament week with a 14-2 record.  We are really happy to be in this position at this time of year.  Our team and coaches would once again like to thank our fans for their great support getting out on the road and being there for our players.”

Hay Springs and Crawford  PAC ourney GAMES- January 24th / 25th

LADY CATS ARE THE 2014 PANHANDLE CONFERENCE BB CHAMPIONS!

“On Friday in the Panhandle Conference Tournament in Edgemont our team was able to get by Hay Springs 51-31.  This was another nice team win for us as we had 8 different players score, and played pretty good defense.  Our rebounding was suspect on a number of possessions which is something we really need to work on if we want to achieve our goals for the season.”

“In the championship game of the Panhandle Conference we were able to defeat Crawford for the third time this season 52-44.  This was a very hard fought game with both teams having runs offensively and quality defensive stops.   We need to take our hats off to the Rams as they were very ready to play in this intense atmosphere.  Kaitlin Rudloff led them in scoring piling up 25 points against us to get more on the board than any other player this season.  We outscored the Rams 28-15 in the second half to seal the win.  The highlight for us was going 8 for 9 from the foul line in the fourth quarter.  This is a win that we can really build on and for the first time in many years our Lady Cats brought home a conference championship.”

BAYARD AND SIOUX CO. GAMES- January 17th / 18th

“On Friday January 17th we were able to defeat Bayard on their home floor 50-43.  This was one of the most difficult games to get any rhythm going that we have had this season.  There were numerous fouls called, and to our players credit we did a pretty fair job scoring at the foul line, and that was the difference in the game for us.

It was a good game to survive and get home with a win.  In the Junior Varsity contest our kids once again played really well defeating Bayard 50-21. “

“On Saturday January 18th we hosted the Sioux County Warriors.  Our Junior Varsity defeated the Warriors 38-5 in a two quarter contest.  In the Varsity contest we played about as complete a game as we have to date in defeating Sioux County 63-20.  We had nine different players get into the scoring column.

Our rebounding and defense was sound in this one against a well-coached Warrior squad. We will head into the Panhandle Conference Tournament at 10 wins and 2 losses on the season.”

GARDEN CO. AND BANNER CO.  GAMES- January 10th / 11th

“Our basketball team got back in action on January 10th with a two quarter JV game against Garden County.  Our ladies played very well and defeated the Eagles 28-2.  Following that contest we defeated Garden County in the varsity contest 55-39.  We played quite sluggish in the first two quarters and were down 28 – 23 at half.

In the third quarter we did a much better job of playing defense, which led to early offense for us.  We ended up playing two of our better quarters of the season against a much improved Eagle team.”

“There was only one game at Banner County on Saturday January 11th.  We had 12 different players score, and 14 all-together got into this game.  We really had some nice transition baskets and shared the ball as well as we have all season.  This was a rough and tumble event, a bit more like rugby than basketball and our kids rose to the challenge however and played well.

We really like where we are at this point in the season as we start getting ready for our conference tournaments.”

CSC Holiday Tourney - December 27-28th

“In the first round of the Chadron Holiday Tournament our Lady Cats faced a Valentine Badger that was more physical basketball team than we had faced to date.  That physical play along with a fine point guard for the Badgers allowed them to hand us our second defeat on the season 69-54.

We told our team after the game that we can learn a lot from a game like that.  That game will make us better down the road.”

“In the consolation game at Chadron we played Crawford for the second time.  After a first half of playing kind of tentative our team really responded and had a fine second half to defeat the Rams 46-32.  Our coaching staff is very proud of the way we bounced back in this one to get the win.  We have a 6 win 2 loss record for the 2013 portion of the season with most of our goals intact.

As with so many games on the road our Hemingford fans traveled well, and our team really appreciates that.”

BRIDGEPORT AND LEYTON  GAMES- December 20th / 21st

“The Lady Cats of Hemingford head into the Christmas break after a great weekend of Basketball.  On Friday night the 20th of December Hemingford hosted Bridgeport and came away with wins in both the JV and Varsity contests.

In one of the best games of the year for the Junior Varsity, Hemingford won 55 – 18.  All of our young ladies played very well.

In the Varsity contest the Lady Cats led at each quarter break and finish a fine win 56 – 33.  On Saturday we traveled to Leyton and picked up two more wins.  The Junior Varsity won 44 – 21 and the Varsity picked up their fifth win of the season 50 – 31.  The coaches really like where our team is at this point in the season.  We look forward to the break, and also the opportunity coming up on the 27th at the Chadron Holiday Tournament.

All of our players and coaches wish our fans and community a very special Merry Christmas.”

MITCHELL GAME - December 14th

“The Mitchell Tigers came to Hemingford on December for JV and Varsity contests against the Lady Cats.  In the JV game we saw our younger team really take another good step forward on the season by defeating the Young Tigers 36-17.

All twelve girls that dressed were able to get quality time on the floor.  Our transition game allowed us to score early and often to take a 19-3 score into half time.  We are really happy with the progress of this group.  In the Varsity contest Mitchell jumped out to a 23-17 half time lead and held on for the two point win.

Our defense was adequate in the half court however our offense was not able to capitalize on good shots.  The ball just did not seem to want to go into the hole.  This was a physical contest that was ultimately won by the team that was in better physical condition.  One of our goals in the next week is to get some of the cobwebs out and play more like we are capable.

We have two nice opportunities this next week with Bridgeport here on Friday and a road trip to Leyton to finish out our schedule before Christmas.”

CRAWFORD GAME - December 10th

œOn December 10th the Hemingford Lady Cat Basketball team traveled to Crawford for Junior Varsity, Varsity games with the Rams.  It was cold and snowy outside, but on the inside as both the Lady Cat JV and Varsity teams finished the night with wins.  In the JV game our team played their best ball of the young season defeating Crawford 53 - 20.

In the Varsity contest Crawford demonstrated their quality speed and athletic ability in racing out to a 31 - 23 half time lead.  Our kids caught their breath at half time and got organized in the press in the third quarter outscoring Crawford 21 - 7 in that stanza.

We finished the game with some quality ball handling to finish off the Rams 55 - 47.  This was a real good win for our kids against a very solid athletic group from Crawford.

GAMES VS. GORDON-RUSHVILLE AND HYANNIS - Dec. 6th and 7th

Our Lady Cat Basketball teams got off to a great start this past weekend with games against Gordon/Rushville on Friday and at Hyannis on Saturday.  On Friday against G/R, our JV team really played well against an aggressive quick Mustang squad.

We came out on top in that one, however in Hyannis on Saturday our young players fell behind the Longhorns early and were not able to come out with a win in this contest.  The varsity team found success on Friday night against Gordon/Rushville 57-50.

In this game, our team had good success in the transition game with several fast break layups.  We also did a nice job of moving our feet, and getting in good defensive position in a very physical contest.  On Saturday in Hyannis the varsity had another good effort defeating the home team 56-38.  This was another game where our quickness and full court game made the difference.

In both of the first two games we have played at least ten players giving us the hope that we will have a deep bench during the course of the season.  We will play in Crawford on Tuesday, December 10th and host Mitchell on Saturday December 14th.

Our girls and coaching staff would like to thank our fans for all of their support on two really cold nights to be out.
