2013 Nebraska State Wrestling Tourney Concludes
Cat Wrestlers Finish with two wins at State Meet
First Round - Thursday, February 14th
The 2013 Nebraska State Wrestling Meet started off with three Hemingford matches Thursday morning. HHS Senior Cash Weber won his first round match quickly, pinning Vince Vollmer of Ravenna early in the first period.
His next opponent will be (41-1) Devin Dibbern, a fourth place finisher at last year’s state meet. Hemingford’s freshman duo of 106 pounder Cooper Weber and 113 pounder Lee Jespersen both wrestled solid matches, but fell in the first round, Weber by decision to Dawson Trampe of Amherst, and Jespersen by fall to (31-10) Tommy Roth of Arcadia-Loup City.
The younger Weber and Jespersen will next see action on Friday morning in the first round of consolations, while Cash Weber will wrestle again Thursday in the Quarter-Finals.
Quarter Final Round -Thursday, February 14th
Amherst's Devin Dibbern was too strong for Cash Weber in the 2013 State Wrestling Quarter-Final round, as he won by first period fall over the Hemingford Senior. Weber will next wrestle Friday in the second round of consolations. Weber's record now is (11-5). Dibbern improved to (43-1)
First Round Consolations - Friday, February 15th
106 - Cooper Weber (14-18) won by Fall over Shawn Thelan (20-16) of Randolph
113 - Lee Jespersen (22-16), lost by Fall to Ryan Pelster (32-10) of Pope John/Elgin
Jespersen completes an outstanding Freshman season for the Cats. He was the most consistent wrestler this season for Hemingford, placing in every meet held this year leading up to state.
Second Round Consolations - Friday, February 15th
106 - Cooper Weber (14-19) lost by decision to Kevin Lienemann (32-18) of Alma
Weber completed his freshman season competing most matches against older, more-experienced wrestlers, and usually faced a weight dis-advantage. In spite of that, his first trip to the State meet was a success, where he was able to win a match.
138 - Cash Weber (11-6) lost by Fall to Hayden Geis (32-15) of Elm Creek
Weber completes a great four-year career at HHS with his trip to state and a first round victory, even though injury kept him from wrestling in six meets this season. He was the team leader in practice and helped to inspire all of the underclassmen to work their hardest. He was the only senior this year.
Though the Cats have completed their 2012-2013 season, thanks is due to both coaches, Head Coach Kyle Walker and Assistant Jake Frost; the parents of all of the wrestlers for their support and sacrifices;and team managers Carter Buchheit, Jaden Walker, Creel Weber, and Kage Jespersen. Thanks to Bob Haas for getting the team to and from the meets safely!
Next season looks promising as there will be a few wrestlers that return for the Cats whose injuries this year prevented a complete season, as well as some talented junior high wrestlers that will soon be part of the resurgent high school program at Hemingford - GO CATS !
