HHS Seniors Choose to Give Back to Our Community
Thanks Class of 2014!
Giving back to the Community
When the seniors were told that they needed to make one day of school up, they got together as a class and began brainstorming. Many options were brought forth—garage sales with money going to charity, extra classroom hours, or some kind of service project. In the end what was supported by the class sponsors, Mrs. Hucke and Mr. Collins was to “give back” to the community. The seniors thought that Mrs. Shaver, Mrs. Wade, Mrs. Giorgi retiring teachers this year and Mr. Fodnes should be the benefactors of yard clean-up projects. Seniors signed up for specific days to work and became the “work” crew.
On the days that weather was not conducive to outside work, students went to work on the school grounds. Groups washed windows in all buildings, wiped down lockers, and scrubbed bleachers and bleacher floorboards. Some students used this makeup school time to do some additional studying.
In one nights time, the boys were able pick up trash around town—city park, fair grounds, numerous streets and the highway going west. Another evening, the groups split and the senior men went to the Wade home and cleaned gutters. Since Roger Wade had most of his raking completed, the guys decided to rake the yard next door as a surprise before heading out to Shaver’s. Other Seniors, mainly girls, were at the Shaver residence tackling the tumbleweeds, raking and cleaning the gutters.
The Lyle Fodnes lawn raking was the final project where the picture was taken and where nine students completed their hours. When the projects and the hours were completed, this idea “Giving Back” from the seniors might be a good one that should be done each year whether the seniors need to make up hours or not. Thank you to the class sponsors for also making this event successful.
