Lady Cats finish in Third with Win over Crawford
Gas station owners along Highway 2 south were smiling this past week, as Hemingford joined Sioux County, Crawford, and Hay Springs in making repeated trips to Hyannis for basketball tourney action over four days, even though both host teams were eliminated in the first round.
Sioux County Game
A slow start offensively that had The Lady Cats in an early 0-9 deficit proved difficult to overcome, though the Ladies made a spirited fourth quarter run, falling by one, 47-48 to Sioux County in PAC Tourney action. Coach Shelmadine felt that, " The Sioux County game was a very good high school basketball game. We fell behind early and battled back and put ourselves in position to win in the end. We fell one point short to a very good Sioux County ball club. Too bad only one team gets the "W"" Hemingford was led by Mallory Moeller with 14 points, followed by Steph Sorenson with 8. Amanda Winten , Ashley Yardley, and Shelby Campbell each scored 6 points. Briana Paris had 5, and Tori Towne had 2.
Crawford Game
Saturday afternoon found the Lady Cat faithful back in Hyannis for the consolation championship against the Lady Rams of Crawford. Hemingford didn't disappoint, earning a 44-33 victory, claiming a third place in the PAC tourney. Coach Shelmadine felt that, "The girls came back against Crawford and showed some real patience. We did not shoot very well, but our defense was awesome! " " We are still a little banged up, but we like where we are headed the last three weeks before districts. We appreciate the faithful who continue to support the girls." Though no one was in double figures in scoring, the points were spread out pretty evenly, with Briana Paris and Mallory Moeller scoring 8, Shelby Campbell with 6, and Whitney Morava with 5, hitting 5 of 6 free throws! Ashley Yardley and Tori Towne had 4 each, followed by Amanda Winten, Steph Sorenson, and Kelsey Forgey with 2 apiece.
