A Trip of a Lifetime

May 05, 2009

Imagine the field trip of your dreams. The sixth grade class recently went on a fun-filled trip to Kearney, Lincoln, and Omaha.  Going on this trip was a great experience for the students and teachers willing to learn all about Nebraska's history.

We all gathered our things and loaded the big Bobcat bus on Thursday morning anxiously awaiting our field trip.  After what seemed to be eternity, the bus departed from Hemingford on its way to Kearney.  The first stop would be the Kearney Arch.  We got to learn about the settlers coming west and the Native American people.  The arch was full of realistic items that taught us all about Nebraska's history.  Next, we went to the First Lutheran Church to drop off our sleeping bags and clothes.  Then it was on to the much awaited Big Apple Fun Center.  There we played in Ballocity, a giant ball pit, experienced all types of arcade games, and had the opportunity to go bowling or play black light miniature golf. We had tons of fun there.

The next morning we woke up bright eyed and bushy tailed and got ready to head to Lincoln.  Our first stop in Lincoln was Morrill Hall, a museum on the UNL campus.  We got to look around and see all the amazing skeletons, including the mammoth which is Nebraska's state fossil. After walking around Morrill Hall, we trekked over to Memorial Stadium.  This was a highlight for several of us.  Our tour guide led us around the stadium, took us to the press boxes on the 14th floor, let us race across the Nebraska football field, and finally led us into the Heisman trophy room where we were introduced to the three Heisman trophy winners via video. By that time we were getting pretty hungry, so our next stop was Spaghetti Works.  We got to feast on some of the best spaghetti, garlic bread, and delicious salad ever.  From there we went to the Nebraska Bookstore .  At the bookstore, we looked around and bought some souvenirs to take home with us.  After the bookstore, we took a long walk to the capitol building.  We saw many art sculptures and even walked around the governor's mansion. Once we got to the capitol building, we went inside and were introduced to our tour guide, Jameson.  He explained to us how and when the capitol building was designed and shared a little secret about himself.  We were all surprised when he revealed that he was none other than the Husker mascot, Lil' Red.  After walking for what seemed to be miles, we anxiously loaded onto the bus for a little rest while traveling to the SAC (Strategic Air and Space) Museum.  Here we built and flew balsa airplanes, constructed and launched rockets, toured a new exhibit about the brain and the museum.  Then we headed off to bed in the cargo plane.  This was fun, but a little crowded.  The next morning we ate a quick breakfast, loaded the bus, and headed home.

We would once again like to thank all the businesses and people for donating prizes for the Bingo night.  Our "trip of a lifetime" would not have been possible without you!
