Music Students Enjoy Field Trip

And a Little Music History

by Sue Shaver

December 15, 2006

8th Grade Musical Field Trip (Click on the underlined link for a picture slideshow)

Eighth grade music students recently traveled to Joyce’s house for class, where Joyce showed students a player piano refurbished by her dad Bill Klemke, and explained to students how the piano works.

Joyce also explained the process of sound production on an early phonograph with cylinder she has, and allowed Mrs. Shaver the opportunity to play her antique pump organ.

After taking a turn at the pedals of the piano, students found it isn't as easy at it looks! You have to hang on to the piano in order to pump the pedals, exerting a lot of strength to keep the roll playing.

Joyce treated the students with tasty Christmas sugar cookies before loading the bus to return to school.

"It was really cool seeing some things that we don't see anymore." - Baily

"We got to have cookies and play the piano. It was fun to play the piano and go to Joyce's house." - Gina

"We played a refurbished player piano and learned all about it! Then we got great cookies! - Katee

"This was an amazing player piano, and we got cookies." - Tyler

"I really like the player piano. It was a good experience." - Chance

"Joyce's house was nice. I liked the piano but most of all the cookies were the best!

"The trip to Joyce's house was fun, entertaining, and educational. We saw three things - a piano, an organ, and a very (very) old record player. The trip was exquisite and interesting. I thought it was very nice of her to let us go to her house." - Ruby
