Marla Wade

A graduate of Alliance High, I received my Bachelor’s Degree from Chadron State College after a journey through UNL then CSC.  20 years later I finished my Master’s Degree with Humanities as a major.  That allowed me to pursue both areas more in depth that I teach, art and Spanish.  After many years of substitute teaching, this was my first (and ONLY) full-time teaching job.  Since 1999, I have also coordinated the annual trip for the juniors to Washington, D. C. in the spring.  Each year a different teacher (and spouse) sponsors and travels with the students as it is felt that it is a valuable learning experience for any teacher and enhances their classroom teaching regardless of the area they teach.  Spring is a busy time as it is also art show time for the high school art classes who exhibit at the Carnegie Arts Center in Alliance.  In March we also compete in the WTC and PC quiz bowls, both junior and senior high.

One of the highlights of my teaching and studies was a trip to Spain through CSC in the summer of 2003.  There were art museums on every corner!  It was like opening Janson’s History of Art to any page and I was standing in front of it.  The colors on the paintings are incredible.  No print will ever do them justice.  A trip to Toledo to see the home and works of El Greco was especially impressive.  On interests and activities outside of school, my family is grown so I like to go visit them.  I am also involved with art shows and the Box Butte Art Society.  My D.C. kids do a fundraiser painting the Christmas Diorama and I spend a lot of time with that each year.

I married Roger Wade, a Vietnam veteran, in 1971.  We have three children.  Holly is the coordinator of Fitness and Wellness at James Madison University in Harrisonburg, Virginia (about 2 hours out of D.C.)  Aaron married Cara Messersmith in Alliance in June 2002.  After living in Kearney and Grand Island, they returned a year ago when Aaron was named editor of the 100-year-old Hemingford Ledger (the first non-Kuhn in three generations).  Cara is a part-time speech pathologist in Alliance and a BUSY mom!  In April 2006, they blessed us with our first grandchild, a boy named Camden Moses.  As of December 2007, Camden has a little brother named Bryce Emmanuel who is trying hard to keep up with big brother!  Kyle, our youngest, graduated from UNL in May of 2006.  He is slated to finish his master’s in Sports Management in December of this year at Texas State and is seeking gainful employment.

The class I sponsored since 7th grade, the Class of 2008, is graduated and off on a new adventure.  They were great kids and I wish them the best.

I am always glad to hear from parents – you are welcome to e-mail me with concerns or joys!
