Marla Wade

I graduated from Alliance High School in 1969. After attending the University of Nebraska for two years, I received my Bachelor's degree at Chadron State College in 1974.  I just received my Master’s degree in the fall, graduating on Friday, December 17, 2004.  I teach art and Spanish at Hemingford High School as I have at HHS since 1987.   After many years of substitute teaching, this was my first (and only) full-time teaching job.  I also coordinate the annual trip for juniors to Washington D.C. in the spring.  Each year, a different teacher sponsors and travels with the students as it is felt that it is a valuable learning experience for any teacher  and enhances their classroom teaching regardless what area they teach.  Spring is a busy time as it is also art show time for the high school art classes who exhibit at the Carnegie Arts Center in Alliance, and Quiz Bowl, both junior and senior high.

One of the highlights of my teaching and studies was a trip to Spain through CSC in the summer of 2003.  There were art museums on every corner!  It was like opening Janson’s History of Art  to any page and I was standing in front of it.  The colors on the paintings are incredible.  No print will ever do them justice.  In particular a trip to Toledo to see the home of El Greco was especially impressive.   On interests or activities outside of school, my family is grown so I like to go visit them.  I’m also involved with art shows and the Box Butte Art Society.  My D.C. kids do a fundraiser painting the Christmas Diorama and I spend a lot of time with that each year.

I married Roger Wade, a Viet Nam veteran, on June 27, 1971 in Alliance, Nebraska.  We have three children.  Holly is finished her masters in exercise science and was just hired as the Coordinator for Fitness and Wellness at James Madison University in Harrisonburg, Virginia.  Aaron married Cara Messersmith in Alliance in June 2002.  After living in Kearney and Grand Island, they just returned to this area where Aaron is the new editor (the first non-Kuhn in three generations) of the 100-year-old Hemingford Ledger and Cara is a part-time speech pathologist in Alliance.  In April 2006, they blessed us with our first grandchild, a charming little boy named Camden Moses. Camden gets a little brother in December!  Kyle, our youngest, graduated from the University of Nebraska at Lincoln in May 2006.  His major is Business Administration but he is now at Texas State working on a Masters in Sports Management.

I look forward to another year as sponsor of the Class of 2008!  I have been with them since 7th grade and after Prom and WorldStrides last year, as well as having many in class twice a day - we really got acquainted.  They are great kids!  I also am excited to travel to Washington D.C. this year with Kelly Thompson and 17 juniors.  Roy Hucke, a former student and now a teacher himself,  will join us with 22 students from Kingman, Arizona.  GREAT!
