The Junior High Quiz Bowl was held  Friday, April 13 at Gering Middle School.  There were 13 teams of seventh and eighth graders competing to make it to the championship rounds.  Hemingford took 12 seventh graders to compete.  In their first round, they went against Kimball.  They won by a score of 85-65, second round was against Alliance and they won again with a score of 75-50, last round was a tough one against Mitchell which we lost 40-60.  Overall, the seventh graders just came out 10 points short of making it to the Championship round and ended up 4th as a team.  Team members and scores are Hans Hansen 25/10/0-35pts, Richard Huele 0/30/0-30pts, Morgan Sutphen 10/15/0-25 pts, Conni Rasmussen 5/5/10-220pts, Katie Heitz 10/0/10-20 pts., Jett Jurgens 10/0/0 10pts, Taylor Yardley 0/10/5 15 pts, Ricky LeClear 15/0/0-15 pts, Libby Wright 5/5/0 10 pts, Sondra Mendiola 5/5/0 10 pts, Rachel Kaman 0/0/5 -5 pts, and Tanner Green-Lembke 0/5/0 5 pts.  Katie Heitz was the captain of the team, so she had to keep track of everyone’s answers, had to say whom was going to answer which questions, and use strategy to decide which questions to answer.  She did an awesome job!

The eighth grade team also competed and did a great job.  They competed against Torrington first and won the tie game because we answered more 15 pt questions than they did with a score of 45-45, then we played Scottsbluff and lost 50-100, the final game was against Alliance and we really came alive and won 100-85.  The final totals put us 7th overall.  The team members and score are Stephanie Whipple 5/5/20 -30 pts, Baily Wood 10/0/15 25pts, Katee Folkerts 0/0/25 -25 pts, Jose Campos 10/0/15 -25 pts, Bethany Wacker 15/10/0 25 pts, Nick Wood 0/0/20- 20pts, Aaron Jespersen 0/15/0-15 pts, Dillon Leisy 0/10/0- 10 pts, Zane Jaramillo 0/0/5 –pts, Brandon Roland 5/5/0 10 pts, Shane Goldstedt 0/50/0-5pts, Andee Michaels 5/0/0-5pts.  Baily Wood was the captain of the 8th grade team and she also did a superb job of keeping track of scores, and making tough decisions on who was going to answer which questions, like how many cubic yards are in a 3’by 81’by 4” area? Or what do you call the process of drying pottery in a kiln?  Great job by both teams on answering some very hard questions!
