Sergeant First Class Monty Smith shares his experiences in Iraq.

Veteran's Day Celebration

by Robyn Prochazka

November 10, 2007

Imagine a day of school where no books are taken out of the desk, no homework is given, but a lot of information and knowledge is given.  Impossible? Not for the 5th and 6th grade students who spent all day Friday learning about Veteran’s Day.  A video, a special visit, a flag burning ceremony, and a musical celebration provided an interesting and exciting day for the Middle School students. The day began with a video about the origins and reasons why people celebrate Veteran’s day.  A visit from Sergeant First Class, Monty Smith from Utah, was a highlight during the day.  Sergeant Smith talked about his two tours in Iraq, which brought about several questions from the students. He shared about the country of Iraq, and his particular job as a soldier in Iraq. Eerie silence filled the air as the students watched the American Legionnaires inspect torn and tattered American flags. After three inspections, recommendations were made that the flags be burned. Watching the American flags erupt in flames brought about different feelings, but overall a feeling of pride.

A musical celebration of Veteran’s Day was the final hurrah for the day.  The Middle School students, the High School choir, High School band, and several talented individuals presented various assortments of songs.
