1. Middle School
Social Studies: Social Studies in 5th and 6th grade is taught in a 2-year rotation. This year we will be studying Explorers which includes the early Native American tribes and the early explorers, development of the 13 colonies, American Revolution, and Government. Next year we will be studying map skills, Western Movement and Pioneers, Homesteading and Immigration. The students will be actively involved in Social Studies through units called interact-simulations. These units allow the students to actively participate in their learning throughout the course.
Math: The 6th graders are refining their skills in the four operations of mathematics: addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. Some new learning this year includes: adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing fractions and decimals, geometry, and measurement. We will also be exploring integers as well as doing various problem solving strategies that require previous taught skills to solve them. The students are also learning to write in math by explaining and justifying the answers they get. In addition, the students participate in a program called 50 in a Minute. This program helps the students master the basic addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division facts.
Language Arts: In Language Arts, we will focus on learning and applying grammar skills while writing and editing. We will also focus on the 6-traits of writing while composing various forms of essays such as expository, persuasive, letters, and narrative.
Spelling: The 6th uses Sitton Spelling. This program does not require the students to take a final spelling test at the end of the week. The students focus on working with words that they will be using throughout their lifetimes. Each unit lasts for 2 weeks and the students will use the words in different ways.
Reading: The 6th grade will be focusing on different types of genre. We will start the year learning about the non-fiction text and how to read it. Students will be learning various skills that will help them become better readers. We will also participate in the AR program where students will be reading books at their own reading level. This encourages students to develop fluency while enjoying various books.
