What's new at the AG Shop
by Gordon Karney
August 12, 2007
The Hemingford AG Classes will learn a lot about building construction this year. The instruction will start with a large project. Mr. Karney and Marvin Spath, with the help of the students in the shop classes, will be building a storage building behind the bus barn. By the time the students finish the project they should know a lot about pouring concrete, framing a building, applying steel siding, electrical wiring and roofing. They will also design their own houses and build scale models of these houses in the shop and classroom. Design types will range from traditional framed houses and concrete construction to geodesic homes. Plumbing will be taught through a community service project at the fairgrounds.
In the Intro to AG class they will learn about plants, animals, leadership and aquaculture. In the shop their major project will be building decorative clocks. They will also learn basic welding and shop safety.
In the seventh grade class they will enjoy leadership lessons, basic plant science and animal husbandry. Their shop project will be building wooden gum ball machines.
The eighth graders will learn about the FFA and what this organization has to offer. They will also undergo more advanced training in leadership and plant and animal science. Their shop project will consist of C02 dragsters.
