STATE SCHOOLS REPORT CARD RELEASED MONDAY
By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS AND DOUBLE Q COUNTRY RADIO (Additional Information added from the actual NDE State Report Card)
Oct 23, 2006, 14:56

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) - Nebraska students have earned the state a glowing report card.

The percentage who met or exceeded standards in math and reading last school year increased over the previous year. And in the third category -- writing -- they stayed at the same level as the 2004-2005 school year.

The report card builds on a trend of improvement. Education officials say the improvement is all the more impressive because of an increase in the number of poor students and those who don't speak English as a first language.

The 2000-2001 school year was the first year data was gathered. In that year, 75 percent of students met or exceeded standards for reading, compared to 87 percent last school year. In math, the percentage rose from 74 percent to 85 percent in the same span.

Fourth, eighth and 11th-graders are tested. The report card is available for public viewing at: www.nde.state.ne.us
