won tickets for themselves and a buddy to meet Dave Pelzer Thursday evening at the Gering Civic Center. Mrs. Shaver and Mrs. Haas took the girls along with Teonna Schlicher and Kaitlyn Jespersen to have a sophisticated dinner with this #1 New York Times Bestselling author of A Child Called "It" and The Privilege of Youth.

When entering the Civic Center they were entertained by live piano and Mr. Pelzer himself mingling amongst the crowd signing autographs and giving advice.  As the students nervously approached Mr. Pelzer he asked them, "What are your goals?".  The girls looked at each other not knowing how he wanted them to answer.  He prompted them, "You want to go to school right?  GRADUATE right?"  The girls answered politely.  Then he asked them about after high school.  The responded that they would like to go to college.  Mr. Pelzer asked, "And your goal for college is to GRADUATE, right?"  He continued with advice like, "Stay in school, listen to your teacher, don't back talk or be a class clown."

After enjoying a 'social' for an hour the students were sat at a formal dining table among 400 + other people.  All were there to help support CASA.  The mission of the National Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) Association, together with its state and local members, is to support and promote court-appointed volunteer advocacy for abused and neglected children so that they can thrive in safe, permanent homes.

Dave Pelzer was also there to support CASA though his very entertaining speech.  In a nutshell his message was:  No matter what your circumstances are...NO EXCUSES it's your choice to be happy  - "COWBOY UP" -  Be nice to each other - Take responsibility for your own actions and quit blaming others - Yes, life can be tough but you must choose to make it better.
