Cats are 2006 PAC Runner-ups
Following their opening play-in victory over Hyannis, the Hemingford Boys Basketball team found itself in the thick of the conference tourney in Hyannis, winning one and losing one for a 2-1 tourney record, finishing in second place for 2006.
The Cats had a "nice team effort" according to Coach Lanik in beating Hay Springs in the Semi-finals, 56-47. The win was their fourth of the season, and the second in a row for the cats. Coach Lanik also said' " We had some kids come off the bench and really give us a boost, plus our normal starters moved around and played some different positions". Senior Lance Haas and Sophomore Brody Roes each tossed in 14 points, followed by Colt Frahm with 8, Mick Casey with 7, Bryce McVicker with 6, Patrick Jesperson with 4, and Matt Harris with 3. Haas, Frahm, and Roes also led the way in rebounding with Haas grabbing 14 boards, Frahm with 13, and Roes with 11. The cats took 34 shots, making 17 for a 50% average from the field. From the charity stripe, 19 of 34 tries found their mark for a 56% average.
From fair shooting on Friday night, the cats field goal percentage took a chilly turn south Saturday, as they dropped the PAC Championship game to Crawford 52-46 in Hyannis. Just 10 of 41 attempts went through the hoop for the cats, a 24% average. Better but not quite enough was their free throw average of 58%, hitting 14 of 24 shots. Coach Lanik was a little harsh on his own efforts, stating that, " I did a terrible job of coaching this game. I constantly preach patience, concentration, and focus, and I didn't have any of these. I totally misread our kids. It's a credit to them that they came as close as they did to winning the game." For the cats, who trailed by six after the first period and then played even through the last three quarters, Brody Roes scored 15, with Paul Anderson making a successful return with 12 points. Matt Harris had 6, followed by Lance Haas and Ryan Dannar with 5 apiece. Colt Frahm had 2, and Patrick Jesperson rounded out the evening's scoring with 1. Haas swept 14 boards, with Roes close behind with 13. Paul Anderson had 4 steals, with Ryan Dannar getting 3. With the loss, the Cats drop to 4-10 on the season, but should feel good about stringing together two consecutive wins in the tourney to finish as runner-up.
